Watch the heartwarming trailer for Hirokazu Koreeda’s Our Little Sister

Words by David Ehrlich

The Japanese director’s typically sweet-centred new film arrives in the UK next month.

Hirokazu Korreda is one of Japan’s greatest living filmmakers. He makes deeply personal, unapologetically sentiment films about everyday families, often bringing children to the fore. Our Little Sister, adapted from a manga serial by Akimi Yoshida, is his sweetest to film date. It follows a trio of sisters whose close-knit dynamic is disrupted by the arrival of their younger half-sister, who comes to stay with their grandmother.

When we spoke to Koreeda recently for our latest print edition, he told us about the connection between this and his previous film, Like Father, Like Son, about a family forced together (and torn apart) by circumstances beyond their control.
